In accordance with Federal and State regulations, teachers must annually educate students in grades K–12 about appropriate online behavior, including responsible use of social networking sites and cyberbullying prevention.
Digital Citizenship Week
This year's Digital Citizenship Week runs from October 18-22. To support students, staff are invited to take DOE Partner’s workshops before, during, and after Digital Citizenship week. You can also apply for the partnership certifications, up to October 19, 2021.
Details regarding the different curricula you can use to teach Digital Citizenship are below.
Curriculum
You may provide instruction using any of the approved curricular materials below.
Free Options
- Be Internet Awesome: Google’s Be Internet Awesome supports students in grades 3 - 6 in being safe, confident explorers in their online world.
- Common Sense Education: This curriculum provides free lesson plans, interactives, and videos designed to support K-12 students in being good digital citizens. You can also use their Essential Guide to Digital Citizenship for CIPA & E-rate.
- EverFi - Ignition – Digital Wellness and Safety: Ignition: Digital Wellness and Safety is a digital literacy curriculum designed to provide students with the information they need to safely and confidently navigate the digital world for grades 6-9 with the skills to leverage technology safely and effectively.
- Teaching Digital Citizenship Through an Inquiry Lens (NYC DOE Library Services Team).This program builds digital citizenship around an Inquiry framework for grades 1-12.

Certification
When schools have educated students about appropriate online behavior, including responsible use of social networking sites and cyberbullying prevention, school principals need to certify compliance by completing an online form. The link to that form will be emailed to principals and available via PDigest so that either the principals or their designee will be able to complete and submit the form.
